Deepak Sharan, MD - Founder Indian Myopain Society - A Chapter of the International Myopain Society
Dr. Deepak Sharan has supplemented 26 years of International clinical experience in Orthopaedic Surgery with qualifications in Ergonomics, Occupational Safety and Health, Orthopaedic Engineering and Rehabilitation Technology. He has produced over 500 scientific publications or conference presentations, including several on Myofascial Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Syndrome.
He is an internationally recognised expert in Ergonomics and Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (also called Repetitive Strain Injuries or RSI), having developed his own assessment and treatment approach called the SHARAN'S Protocol and the DEEPAK SHARAN Severity Score for musculoskeletal disorders. He leads a team of over 100 medical/rehabilitation professionals that has successfully treated over 500,000 clients with RSI from 40 countries including USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium and Norway since 2001. His prospective study on prevalence and risk factors for RSI in 35,000 Indian Computer Users is the largest study ever on RSI in the world. Dr. Sharan was the chairperson and presenter for several scientific sessions on Ergonomics and RSI at the World Ergonomics Congress (China 2009, Brazil 2012, Australia 2015), ODAM (South Africa 2011, Denmark 2014), HEPS (Spain 2011, Taiwan 2014, France 2016), SEANES (Malaysia 2012, Indonesia 2016), Orthopaedic World Conference (Dubai, 2012), and PREMUS (France 2010, South Korea 2013, Canada 2016).
Described as a "cult figure in the world of RSI" by the Wall Street Journal, Dr. Sharan is the Medical Director of RECOUP, which has a hospital in Bangalore and 15 clinics across India. In addition, RECOUP has around 50 on-site Ergonomics and Occupational Health Clinics on the premises of Oracle, Texas Instruments, Mercedes Benz, Qualcomm, SAP, Yahoo, CSR, NetApp, ABB and Honeywell, covering over 500,000 workers daily.
He is the Founder Director of EPM International Ergonomics School, Milan, Italy and the President of EPM Indian Ergonomics School. He will be organising the 11th International Scientific Conference on the Prevention of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (PREMUS) in September 2022 in Bangalore, India. He is the Chairperson elect of the Musculoskeletal Disorders Subcommittee of International Commission of Occupational Health.
Dr. Sharan was the winner of Basic Science Orthopaedic Research Grant (2014-15) of the Indian Orthopaedic Association for the research project titled "Prevalence, Risk factors and Clinical Features of Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders among Orthopaedic Surgeons in India." This is one of the most prestigious research awards in Orthopaedics in India. He was also the winner of the 2015 International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) award for Pain Education for the project: “Course on understanding pain for individuals with chronic pain.” Dr. Sharan was the winner of the 2016 Silver Jubilee Oration of Indian Orthopaedic Association, 2012 Henri Bensahel Award (the world's highest award for research in Paediatric Orthopaedics, awarded by SICOT (The International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology), and the National Disability Award for the year 2008 by the Govt. of India for developing a path breaking surgical procedure for Cerebral Palsy called SEMLARASS. He was felicitated in 2005 by the then President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, for his work in Cerebral Palsy.
